Good filter, not so drinking nib – has nasty plastic taste and draws air as you draw water from the bottle

I’ve used the LifeStraw previously on several camping trips and appreciated how light they are and how well they work so for me it was a no brainer to buy this straw/bottle combo. It wasn’t a good idea.

The LifeStraw itself works as it’s supposed to and I have no complaints there, for me it’s the bottle, or more specifically something between the filter and the pop up silicone mouthpiece in the top. It’s at this point that some part of the plastic components is giving off one heck of a bad plastic taste. So bad that the water isn’t drinkable. In over a year this stink/bad taste hasn’t dissipated so something nasty has been included in the components. Normally plastic that stinks off gases over time and the odour diminishes but not in this case. I can fill the bottle with RO water and what I get out of the bottle/filter is nasty.

I have no idea what happened, did I get the bad apple or was there a bad run that quality control didn’t catch and the bottles got sent out. And this is for use with municipal tap water never mind anything else. I never took it camping since I don’t trust it.

For those who believe you can simply take water from any source and drink it without worries, I wish you a speedy recovery. This thing will not (nor will any other portable water filtering bottle) eliminate all viruses. If you don’t believe me, please put me to the test and do some research on the matter rather than just trust a manufacturers sales material. I’ve lived in third world countries and “have been there, done that” when it comes to getting sick from drinking that’s supposedly safe water from portable filtration systems.

~The cap seals to the bottle and I have never experienced any leaks but then because of the taste I don’t use it that often
~It’s durable enough, it dropped a couple of times from shoulder height and the only indication that it fell is one scuff mark on the bottom edge.
~The flip up straw piece needs to make a good seal where it connects to the inner straw or you draw in air bubbles as you draw up the water, mine doesn’t seal well and I get air bubbles.

The nasty plastic taste remains well over a year after having purchased it. If you’re looking for a product like this I highly recommend using Sawyer Products SP140 1 Liter Personal Water Bottle Filter (Blue)

Let me say it again, I like and continue to use the LifeStraw and have four of them in BOB’s and in vehicle emergency kits, the issue here is something at the top between the straw and the silicone mouthpiece.
