It looks a lot like the dollar store cheapo infrared thermometers but the quality here is better by far.
The first thing I noticed when pulling it from the packaging was that it’s far sturdier than the cheap competitors’ products. It’s also a little beefier, the head and handle are a little wider than the others. It’s comfortable to hold.
One thing that surprised me when I opened up the battery compartment is that it uses a 9-volt battery (included) rather than a couple of AA’s. I’m hoping that the 9-volt will last longer but this will take time to determine. It’s also part of the reason that the handle is somewhat wider as it takes a little more room to accommodate.
Using it is like the others. Point at the general area I want to measure (engine blocks, heat exchangers, electric motors, or anything else) and pull the trigger. Then once the laser dot appears simply move the dot till it’s on target and read the display. Temperature (select F or C) readout changes in real time, about every half second so it’s easy to move over an object and quickly find out where the hottest ort coldest area is. To save on battery life, when taking extended measurements, the backlight can be toggled off. The laser can also be toggled on or off to help save the battery when pinpoint accuracy isn’t required.
Accuracy wise it’s accurate to within less than half a degree C as compared to our lab thermometer. This is more than accurate enough for anything other than situations that require a higher degree of accuracy for tolerance reasons.
Here’s the kicker though, it’s priced to match the cheaper products but is a better built and more accurate device!
